A Jewish Star Shines Anew
After a disappointing debut as a New York Met last season, Shawn Green has hit the ground running in 2007.
After seven games his batting average is an impressive .370. To make matters more interesting, the slugger has announced that for every run he bats in this year he will be donating $180 (10 times chai) to the UJA Federation of New York.
Sure, this is small potatoes for someone pulling down $10 million a year, but if Green is to match his 2001 stats (and drive in 125 runs), that’s enough to keep him in the majors — Major Gifts, that is.
Hello, fellow Forward reader! I’m Joel Brown, a Forward reader and supporter for more than 15 years, and currently the chair of the board of directors.
I’m an avid Forward reader because it ticks so many of my essential boxes: excellent journalism, Jewish focus and diverse viewpoints. In today’s political climate, what I most appreciate is the Forward’s independence — made possible by the generosity of its membership.
The Forward is committed to bringing you unbiased, nuanced Jewish news. From my position as board chair, I see an exciting future as we expand our position as the definitive independent voice of contemporary American Judaism.
