Weprin Airs TV Ads in Close Race for Weiner’s Seat

Democrat David Weprin is reportedly spending more than $250,000 on TV ads as he seeks to win a tight battle with Republican Bob Turner for disgraced ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner seat.

The New York Post reported that Weprin, an Orthodox Jew, has allocated $157,600 for broadcast ads and $102,817 for cable, and says the numbers could rise.

The special election to fill the seat, which polls say could be close, will be held on Tuesday.

“The idea that this race is so close is a humiliation for the Democratic Party,’’ a New York Democratic official told the paper.

As part of the ad buy, the Weprin campaign unveiled its first TV attack ad that will link Turner to the Tea Party.

Weprin is a heavy favorite to keep the seat, which includes a large number of Jews. Democrats hold a significant registration edge and Weprin has raised much more cash than Turner.

The upstart GOP candidate has gained some traction by seeking to link Weprin to President Obama, especially his perceived lukewarm support of Israel.

Ex-Mayor Ed Koch endorsed Turner along with conservative Democratic Assemblyman Dov Hikind.

Weiner resigned in disgrace after being caught sending inappropriate text messages to women.
