Sheldon Adelson has reportedly given $5 million to an independent political action committee that is supporting Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich.
The Washington Post said the money was designed to keep Gingrich competitive through the upcoming South Carolina primary.
Adelson, who owns casinos and media interests in Israel, pledged $20 million to Winning Our Future, a so-called Super PAC run mostly by former Gingrich associates.
Super PACs can raise and spend unlimited amounts of cash as long as it acts independently of the candidate’s campaign.
It’s unclear if he plans to give all the money to or may shift some of it to another candidate as the race evolves.
