Adelson Says Newt Is at ‘End of Line’
Casino and hotel magnate Sheldon Adelson said he believes GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich is “at the end of his line” in the race.
Adelson’s remarks, reported Wednesday by the Los Angeles Jewish Journal, were given informally to a small group on Monday at a Las Vegas hotel and casino owned by Adelson, on the sidelines of The Jewish Federations of North America’s second annual TribeFest, a three-day leadership and networking retreat attended by about 1,400 Jewish professionals.
Adelson, who with his wife has donated more than $16 million to Winning Our Future, an independent committee, or Super PAC, that is run by former Gingrich associates in support of the candidate, also criticized the two Republican frontrunners, Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney, according to the Jewish Journal.
Adelson also reportedly predicted that it is unlikely Gingrich will become a vice presidential candidate.
Adelson, chairman and CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., is worth more than $21 billion, according to Forbes magazine. He is a major giver to Birthright Israel, which provides free 10-day trips to Israel for Jews aged 18 to 26.
