Middle East policy resolution adopted by the Union for Reform Judaism (correction)

A front-page headline in last week’s Forward misstated the substance of a Middle East policy resolution adopted by the Union for Reform Judaism and communicated last week in a letter to Secretary of State Colin Powell. The Reform movement strongly endorsed Prime Minister Sharon’s unilateral disengagement plan, while separately urging the administration to increase its efforts to renew Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. The Reform movement did not attack either the disengagement plan or the Bush administration’s support for it. Our news story reported the news correctly, but the headline failed to reflect that.

Additionally, our story failed to note that the Reform movement supported two recent congressional resolutions endorsing Israel’s policies, although it questioned them on specifics, including their failure to link withdrawal to talks and to address Palestinian humanitarian conditions.

We regret the errors.
