100 Years Ago in the Forward

Two weeks ago, a woman saw another leave a lot of garbage in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. The first woman told the other that she should clean up, and that newspapers had written about how Jews are slobs. After a dispute and no resolution, they left. Later, both picked up their Forverts newspapers and began reading. When the first woman saw the other, she told her that the paper would agree with her. The other woman said the paper would say tired workers shouldn’t have to clean up. They decided to go to the Forverts and ask. We told them that it’s true: Workers’ lives are often a living hell, and the parks are their only respite, but they still have to clean up after themselves.

Brooklyn detectives suspect it was the infamous Reles gang of Brownsville that wanted to take out one of its gangland enemies but instead shot an innocent passerby, 24-year-old Bessie Kornblat, at the intersection of Watkins Street and Henneman Avenue. As the car whipped through the intersection, a hail of bullets shot out of it, causing panic on the streets. Kornblat took cover and didn’t know she had been shot until she took a few steps and collapsed. She was attended to by other passersby, and eventually put into an ambulance and taken to the hospital. No one got the car’s license plate number.

50 Years Ago in the Forward

According to Shimon Peres, an Israeli Defense Ministry officer, the United Arab Republic of Egypt and Syria is preparing for war against Israel. Peres says that Egyptian dictator Gamal Abdel Nasser has built a network of airfields, railroads and roads and has also amassed a large selection of new weapons, all to use against Israel. It is also alleged that all this military activity has been taking place under the tutelage of Soviet advisers. The Soviets have also outfitted Egypt with its latest weapons. Peres noted that as Egypt’s military strength continues to grow, Nasser’s mouth begins to run, making such comments as, “The time is coming close when we will free Palestine for the Arabs.”
