100 Years Ago in the forward

It is not known why Henry Greenwald wanted to kill Adolph “Pickles” Berg, but as the former chased the latter down a street in New York City’s Harlem area, pointing a revolver at him, “Pickles” grabbed a 12-year-old schoolboy by the name of Charlie Fisher and used him as a shield. Greenwald’s fury was such that he shot anyway, and instead of hitting Berg, he shot little Charlie, killing him instantly. As an angry crowd began to chase Greenwald, “Pickles” took the opportunity to escape. Greenwald, realizing the horrible crime he committed, ran into a nearby tenement lobby and shot himself in the head. Although it took the police a few days to find “Pickles,” they eventually did, and he was sent to the tombs. Oddly, though, they do not know what crime to charge him with and, as a result, “Pickles” may go free.

75 Years Ago in the forward

Adolf Hitler held secret meetings with his Cabinet recently, allegedly to discuss how to handle the Jewish question as it pertains to next year’s Berlin Olympics. Recent protests in America demanded a boycott of the Olympics on account of the way Germany treats its Jews. It is alleged that Hitler plans to postpone the recently enacted anti-Jewish laws until after the United States decides whether or not to participate in the 1936 Olympics. If America decides not to send a team, it will be a huge blow to the prestige of the games. It’s not only Jewish groups that are against sending a team to Berlin; a number of Catholic groups and newspapers have come out against participation. As a result, the Germans have devised this “trick” of waiting until after the Olympics to enact their racist legislation.

The Jewish community, in harness with general public opinion, is extremely concerned about a the recent flood of anti-Catholic propaganda — similar in many respects to anti-Semitic propaganda — that has appeared in order to smear the Democratic presidential candidate, Senator John F. Kennedy. Former American Jewish Committee president Irving Engel told the press that this anti-Catholic propaganda is being created by the same anti-Semitic clique that initiated similar campaigns against Franklin Roosevelt during the 1930s and ’40s and, like those, are being financed by reactionary industrialists who hated Roosevelt and who hate Kennedy for his liberal views.
