Although kosher restaurants aren’t necessarily known for their quality, in recent years several have opened that are not only excellent by kosher standards, they are excellent by non-kosher standards as well.
If you keep kosher and have a diverse group of friends and dining partners, it seems inevitable that you will at some point have to explain yourself. Kosher can be complicated, and of course a 3,000-year-old practice will never be as fashionable as the diet du jour. Then again, Paleo came back from the Stone Age, but I digress.

Last year, the Forward reported on a brouhaha around ham-and-cheese sandwiches sold at a Zaro’s bakery location in New York — which was certified kosher. Zaro’s didn’t appreciate the coverage, to the extent that an attorney reached out to us to “clarify.”
