When the leader of Houston’s Chabad Teen Network (CTeen) was forced from her home by floodwaters, she took shelter with friends who happened to live near the local Chabad house, Chabad of Uptown. Naomi Bier, a 28-year-old Houston resident, has been volunteering there ever since, and created an Amazon Wishlist to gather donations of food and other items to help Houston’s Jewish community. (Chabad is collecting donations for all Harvey relief at this site).
(JTA) — With the temperature in the mid-80s, it was not the night to kick off Shabbat dinner with chicken soup, or rather, given our family’s eating mishegas, vegan chicken soup (yes, there is such a dish). So where or whom do I turn to for a seasonal alternative?
When I sat down recently with Mitchell Davis, executive vice president of the James Beard Foundation, in the great hall of the Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center in Falls Village, Connecticut, the air in the room was still fragrant with lacto-fermenting pickles and lavender oil from the DIY Fair and Shuk that was held the night before. We were there for the Hazon Food Conference, and while we talked we were surrounded by conference-goers munching on organic rice cakes slathered with blueberry jam that had been made on the premises.
