Bagels and Ballots — Wednesday

Florida Heat: According to Politico’s Alexander Burns, Gov. Charlie Crist, running in Florida’s senatorial contest as an independent, is about to get “the full Arlen Specter treatment” as the state’s Democratic party supports an ad from Democratic opponent Kendrick Meek that points to Crist’s Republican — no less, his “Jeb Bush Republican” — past. It includes footage of Crist praising Sen. John McCain for choosing Sarah Palin as his 2008 running mate. (Politico)

More From the Sunshine State: Ron Klein, Democratic incumbent in the race to represent Florida’s 22nd district, is planning to introduce legislation calling for “corporate responsibility” from companies directly involved in the Holocaust. It’s aimed at a rail company that was involved in deporting Jews to concentration camps. (The Sun-Sentinel)

Now That’s Some Strong Tea: A new Wall Street Journal/NBC poll shows that as midterms loom, the Tea Party is only growing stronger. 71% of Republicans called themselves tea supporters, and one third of all likely voters support the movement. (The Wall Street Journal)

Magic Credentials: Delaware’s Republican senatorial candidate and Tea Party favorite Christine O’Donnell, who “dabbled in witchcraft,” references her attendance at “Oxford University.” But, alas, that wasn’t really the case … It was just a course from the Phoenix Institute. (Washington Post’s The Plum Line)

Ohio Reddening:A new poll shows an increasingly decisive outcome for Ohio’s senatorial race: Republican and former Bush official Rob Portman leads the state’s Democratic lieutenant governor Lee Fisher 50% to 37%. For those who’d rather not count, it’s a 13-point lead. (Reuters

Bam, Hot on the Trail?: A Barack Obama-led big rally in Wisconsin yesterday featured a visit from Wisconsin Democratic senatorial incumbent candidate Russ Feingold, and an energized crowd — though attendants at Obama’s town-hall style gathering in New Mexico seemed somewhat less enthused. (Politico)

I hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, I’d like to ask you to please support the Forward’s award-winning journalism this Passover.

In this age of misinformation, our work is needed like never before. We report on the news that matters most to American Jews, driven by truth, not ideology.

At a time when newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall. That means for the first time in our 126-year history, Forward journalism is free to everyone, everywhere. With an ongoing war, rising antisemitism, and a flood of disinformation that may affect the upcoming election, we believe that free and open access to Jewish journalism is imperative.

Readers like you make it all possible. Right now, we’re in the middle of our Passover Pledge Drive and we still need 300 people to step up and make a gift to sustain our trustworthy, independent journalism.

Make a gift of any size and become a Forward member today. You’ll support our mission to tell the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
