Mubarak Steps Down
After almost 30 years at the helm of Egypt, embattled President Hosni Mubarak has stepped down, and left Cairo for his home in Sharm el-Sheik. Vice President Omar Suleiman announced Mubarak’s resignation on Friday. The New York Times is reporting that the Egyptian military, in a communiqué issued after the announcement, pledged “to carry out a variety of constitutional reforms.”
According to reports, thousands of Egyptian protesters gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and cheered news of Mubarak’s resignation. Protesters have gathered daily in the Square since anti-government demonstrations began on January 25.
