Jewish Women in New York Lose Virginity Later Than Others: Poll

Apparently, New York isn’t the den of sin it’s cracked up to be. At least, not for Jewish women.

One in 8 Jewish women in New York over 18 years old is still a virgin, according to an unscientific study conducted by an online dating web site. That’s a markedly higher proportion than the approximately 1 in 11 for the population as a whole, the web site asserted.

What’s more, 58% of 1,299 Jewish women surveyed believed that 21 is the right age for a woman to have sex for the first time, which is about three years later than the age picked by a nationwide survey.

“Virgins do exist, and many now use online dating as a resource to find that special someone,” said Brandon Wade, CEO and Founder of SeekingArrangement.com, the web site that carried out the poll.

The dating site, which claims more than 2 million users, conducted the survey over the course of two months in order to determine the relationship between online dating and sexual activity. More than 77,000 women in 24 major U.S. cities answered the series of online questions.

Of course, it’s debatable whether the findings are an accurate reflection of the population as a whole or whether their findings about Jewish women would hold up to a more scientific sampling procedure.

Some 23,379 New York members participated, revealing that 1 in 11 were still virgins. They said the ideal age to lose your virginity is 19.

Women in Cleveland, Columbus, New Orleans, and Los Angeles women reported that their ideal age to have sex for the first time was 18. In five cities — Austin, Charleston, Portland, and Washington D.C. — the ideal age was a comparatively prudish 21.

According to Leroy Velasquez, a SeekingArrangement.com spokesman, women were surveyed regardless of whether or not they had already lost their virginity, “to get a happy median between those who are a little more naïve and those who have been there.”

Velasquez pointed out that the minimum age required to register for the site is 18, meaning that those surveyed were at least that age. The site matches up sugar daddies (usually older men) with younger women and 44% of total users are female college students, CNN reported.

Velasquez claimed the overall conclusion of the study is intriguing.

“The common perception is that online dating enables women to become more promiscuous,” he said. “But what we found is that while people date more actively, they are more picky because they have more options.”

According to a statement released by SeekingArrangement.com, “approximately 74 percent of all women claimed that online dating has increased their selectivity for finding “the one.”

“The modern woman is much less idealistic — many realize that marriage doesn’t always end in bliss, so they date often and carefully,” said Wade, the CEO.

About 18% percent of women reported that they were waiting until marriage to jump into the sack, while only 6% cited personal beliefs or religion.

The “nice Jewish girl” concept, it seems, is not yet extinct — it’s just moved online.
