Finding the Forward 50

In an annual tradition, the staff of this newspaper compiles a list of the 50 people who have made an imprint in the past year on the ways in which American Jews view the world and relate to each other. Last year, for the first time, we invited you, our readers, to send us your nominations for the Forward 50. The results were so interesting and helpful that we are renewing the call for the 2009 edition, which will be published in mid-November.

Corrections: March 27, March 29, April 10

The March 27 East Village Mamele column, “Domestic Workers’ Rights: A Matter of Ethics,” misstated that the Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights includes a living wage of $12 per hour. The bill does not include a living wage. It does, however, include a health care stipulation.

Last winter, the Forward adjusted its printing schedule to try to better serve our readers. Now we are able to further upgrade our service while providing a newspaper that is even fresher, more lively and always original.

I recently attended a memorial service for Edwin O. Guthman, a great American journalist and public servant, who died in Los Angeles in August. This gathering in Washington was for his East Coast admirers — and that included everyone from deans of the Washington press corps to acolytes like myself, lucky enough to work at The Philadelphia Inquirer when Ed, as editorial page editor, set a standard for journalistic excellence that I continue to reach for today. The service was, like Ed, tender, funny and inspiring.

In an annual tradition, the staff of this newspaper compiles a list of the 50 people who have made an imprint in the past year on the ways in which American Jews view the world and relate to each other. As we prepare for the 2008 edition of the Forward 50, which will be published in our November 21 issue, we invite you, our readers, to send us your nominations. To participate, e-mail your suggestions to forward50@forward.com, and explain why your nominee merits inclusion in this year’s Forward 50. Also, please include your name and contact information. The deadline for nominations is Friday, October 17.

The Forward 50 has come to resemble an annual snapshot of American Jewry, with all its power, promise and imperfections — an opportunity to assess not only who is who, but where we are headed and who is leading us there.

I first learned about this marvelous newspaper 30 years ago, when I was a college student studying Jewish immigrant life on the Lower East Side of New York. As a budding journalist, I was captivated by the essential civic and cultural role played by the Forward, and by the power and creativity of its founding editor, Abraham Cahan, who brilliantly chronicled the stories, needs and aspirations of the burgeoning Jewish immigrant community.

We at the Forward are continually seeking ways to improve services to our valued subscribers. In order to enhance the print quality and delivery times of the newspaper, we have scheduled an upgrade in our printing press. Consequently, this week we are publishing a combined, double issue dated February 29/March 7. All subscriptions to the Forward will automatically be extended one week.
