Jean Shafiroff Chairs Cool Animal Events During Hamptons’ Dog Days Of Summer

It’s been a hot, hot, hot July and Jean Shafiroff—an indefatigable and active philanthropist —has been shuttling between New York [a July 14 Bastille Day Luncheon she hosted at Le Cirque] and a roster of Hamptons’ events including the July 9th Dog Days of Summer Party at aado in Sag Harbor where 12 dog adoptees found forever homes, and the July 18 Southampton’s Animal Foundation’s 7th Annual Unconditional Love Gala attended—by among others—board member Georgina Bloomberg, Southampton Mayor Mark Epley U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, John Catsimatidis, Jill Rappaport, and—supporters-honorary chairs Bloomberg Philanthropies, ** Ferguson Cohen,** LLP and** Stifel Financial** Corp.

Addressing the 300 Gala guests at a private Southampton waterfront residence, emcee Chuck Scarborough touted the SASF’s mission—a non-profit organization—for its dedication of providing caring, permanent homes for homeless pets. Rated in the top 10% [shelters] of the country he noted that 94% of animals brought to the shelter are adopted into loving homes. SASF accepts stray pets regardless of age, breed, or health providing them with care, food, training and medical attention. No adoptable animal is left behind. Since Karen and I and members of my family have rescued —and helped find homes—for several cats and dogs—this is close to our hearts.

During my post events’ chat with Jean—whose family has two gentle rescued pit bulls — I asked her about the provenance of her July 14 Bastille Day luncheon attended by—among others—Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Sharon Bush, best selling authors Michael Gross and Nina Burleigh, Ce Ce Black, Janna Bullock.

“Had I known about what would happen at Nice, I would have cancelled the luncheon…. I was terribly upset—disturbed by this act of terrorism…. I am on the board of the French Heritage Society…This is my third Bastille Day luncheon. At last year’s luncheon, I had toasted Paris [France] which America aided in both World War I and World War 2…I called for world peace… I did not hear about Nice until the evening!” Last year, “on November 15,” Shafiroff told me, she had hosted with Congresswoman Maloney, a candle light vigil commemorating the victims following the November 15 terrorist attack in Paris.

Whence this French association? She replied: “My maiden name is Lutri and I am on the Board of the French Heritage Society…Two days later I co-hosted a candle lit vigil at Vin sur Vingt.”

We said good-bye and Shafiroff [author of “Successful Philanthropy”] was off to yet another of her philanthropic adventures.

In this age of misinformation, our work is needed like never before. We report on the news that matters most to American Jews, driven by truth, not ideology.

At a time when newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall. That means for the first time in our 126-year history, Forward journalism is free to everyone, everywhere. With an ongoing war, rising antisemitism, and a flood of disinformation that may affect the upcoming election, we believe that free and open access to Jewish journalism is imperative.

Readers like you make it all possible. Right now, we’re in the middle of our Passover Pledge Drive and we still need 300 people to step up and make a gift to sustain our trustworthy, independent journalism.

Make a gift of any size and become a Forward member today. You’ll support our mission to tell the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
