Here’s the press release put out by the Israeli consulate:
As part of his ongoing dialogue with the congressional delegation from the tri-state area, Ambassador Arye Mekel, Consul General of Israel, met Wednesday with Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY), the Ranking Member on the House Committee of Ways and Means. The two met at the Consulate General in New York, where they discussed recent developments on the international stage as well as what steps the United States and the International community can take to help restore stability to the Middle East.
The Ambassador began by summarizing the political situation in the Palestinian territories and its implication throughout the region. Next, the two discussed the roles of economic development and commercial exchange in bringing welfare and freedom to all corners of the globe.
At the meeting’s conclusion, Ambassador Mekel showed Rangel a tattered Israeli flag that once was flown in the lobby of the World Trade Center. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, the banner was retrieved from the rubble. Today, the flag is prominently displayed in the office of the Consul General, and serves as a solemn reminder of lives lost and triumph of the spirit.
