Wine Of The Week: A Kosher Riesling Available for Under $20…On Amazon!

Engel Reisling 2016 — Finger Lakes, New York

This is one of those wines that’s dangerous to drink alone; too smooth to stop at just one 5 ounce standard serving, I find myself wanting to drink it from a tall glass filled with ice — sophistication be damned. This sounds blasphemous, I know, but with a lychee and lemon team-up that hits the nose as a floral and candied green apple note simmers on the palate, this wine is as fun to drink as a summer cocktail. When cold, this wine is a dead ringer for a shy desert wine just waiting to come out of her shell. Let it warm up a little and this aromatic off-dry beauty transforms into a center-stage diva with complex, floral flavors and a mouth-watering, yet well-balanced, acidity.

Grown in Finger lakes, New York (alongside its sister varietal Gewürztraminer), these white grapes benefit from a temperate microclimate, which is the grape equivalent of attending a prestigious private school in the Swiss Alps.

Grown, produced and sold in New York, this wine lets you brag about consuming a locally produced, “farm-to-table,” small business product. But instead of funky-looking carrots that cost their weight in gold, you’ll have a versatile summer wine that costs only $20. If you live in New York, you can buy a bottle…wait for it…on Amazon.

This white pairs well with Tai or Indian food. Its sweet-acidity can stand up to and complement spicy food, especially light proteins such as fish of the land or chicken of the sea.

This wine is just one way I’m going to reward myself for surviving the winter. Join me.
