Looking Back: July 27, 2012

100 Years Ago

1912 — Arrests continue to be made for the murder of gambler Herman “Beansie” Rosenthal, who was gunned down in front of Manhattan’s Hotel Metropole. Rosenthal had recently been in the news for accusations he made that NYPD vice cop Charles Becker was in cahoots with gamblers and brothel owners all over the city. The arrests made in the Rosenthal murder include known gangsters, but it is widely believed that police officers are also involved. Witnesses said that there were six shooters involved, one of whom was alleged to have been wearing a police uniform.

75 Years Ago

1937 — Protests over the division of Palestine have been officially banned in Jordan. As a result, a number of radical youths have been incarcerated, and it is said that a number have escaped to Palestine. Those arrested by the Jordanian police include a member of the mufti of Jerusalem’s family — a member of the Istiqlal party, which has been accused of having a hand in a number of politically-motivated murders. These radicals are doing their best to scuttle plans to divide Palestine into Arab and Jewish sectors. According to London’s Sunday Times, however, most Jews and Arabs are very pleased with the plan.

50 Years Ago

1962 — The Jewish community in Uruguay is in a panic after a number of attacks were made against Jews in Montevideo. Perpetrated by Nazis, one of the beating victims had a swastika carved into his body. Jews have begun to arm themselves, because eight attacks have occurred since the police made their last arrest. Because of police inaction, the mayor has asked the military to patrol Jewish neighborhoods.
