This Month at Novel Jews
Novel Jews is a downtown reading series that presents provocative and enlightening fiction and literary nonfiction by both today’s literary superstars and the emerging voices of tomorrow. It is co-sponsored by the Sol Goldman 14th Street Y, the JCC in Manhattan and the Forward.

GARY SHTEYNGART was born in Leningrad in 1972 and came to the United States seven years later. His first novel, “The Russian Debutante’s Handbook,” won the Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction and the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction. His fiction and essays have appeared in such magazines as The New Yorker, Granta, GQ and The New York Times Magazine, as well as in many other publications. He will be reading from his next novel, “Absurdistan,” which is due in 2006.
JOSH COHEN has worked at casinos and on cruise ships, as a musician and a translator, and as a journalist for the Forward, New York Press and the now-defunct Prague Pill. Cohen is currently an editor of the PLR (Prague Literary Review). This year, Twisted Spoon Press will publish “The Quorum,” a collection of his short stories. He was selected as a finalist for the 2005 Koret Young Writer on Jewish Themes Award. Two novels of his await publication. He will be reading from his short story, “The Trial.”
