‘Oslo’ Wins Top Outer Critics Circle Honors
J.T. Rogers’s “Oslo,” a gripping account of the behind-the-scenes diplomacy that powered the Oslo Accords, has won the 2017 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Play.
The Awards, announced this morning, also honored Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart’s “Hello, Dolly!” as Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Steven Levenson’s “If I Forget” as Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play, and David Yazbek’s and Itamar Moses’s “The Band’s Visit” as Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.
(What did the Forward’s critics think? Jesse Oxfeld gave “Oslo” a thumbs up but called “Hello, Dolly!” “a classic musical that isn’t so great” and “The Band’s Visit” “rather trite.” I thought “If I Forget” was “pat and predictable.” Whomp, whomp.)
To no one’s surprise, Bette Midler took home Outstanding Actress in a Musical for “Hello, Dolly!,” while Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon both carried away honors for their performances in Lillian Hellman’s “The Little Foxes.” (Linney and Nixon share the same two parts in “The Little Foxes,” alternating who plays the leading role and who the supporting each performance.) Danny DeVito nabbed Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for his work in Arthur Miller’s “The Price.”
The winners will be honored at an awards ceremony on May 25.
