Jewish N.Y. State Senator Leaving Albany For Good

New York State Senator Dan Squadron announced Wednesday that he is leaving office effective Friday, decrying the Albany status quo and announcing a new national political initiative.
First elected to represent parts of Brooklyn in 2008, Squadron would have been up for reelection this year.
“I believed in state government’s potential,” Squadron wrote in a Daily News column laying out his plans. “I still do. But over the years I have seen it thwarted by a sliver of heavily invested special interests.”
After leaving the State Senate, Squadron says he will help lead an effort to recruit state-level candidates nationwide, according to WNYC.
“Resigning is one of the hardest things I have ever done,” Squadron wrote. “I have had the good fortune to serve the best people and neighborhoods on Earth, and to work with the most dedicated and effective staff.”
Squadron’s father, the late Howard Squadron, served as chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and was a prominent attorney.
