Steve Mnuchin Says ‘Obviously’ Trump Could Fire Robert Mueller
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said Sunday that President Trump “obviously” could fire special counsel Robert Mueller.
“That’s obviously up to him,” Mnuchin said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Politico reported.
Mnuchin added that he had no reason to think Trump planned any imminent action against Mueller, which would likely spark a major political crisis similar to Richard Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre” during the Watergate era.
Mueller’s probe into Russian meddling into the presidential election has gained momentum as ex-NSA chief Michael Flynn cooperating and reports that he has obtained tens of thousands of emails from the Trump transition team.
Many of those are believed to have come from presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner, who recently started searching for a “crisis public relations” firm.
As the noose around the White House tightens, calls to fire Mueller have grown louder from the right wing media and some Republicans.
“We have got to get past this investigation. It’s a giant distraction,” Mnuchin said, echoing Trump. “Nobody has said that in any way this impacted the outcome of the election.”
