Florida Governor-Elect DeSantis Vows To Keep Safety Funding For Jewish Schools

Florida Governor-elect Ron DeSantis and Lieutenant Governor-elect Jeanette Nuñez visited a Jewish day school in South Florida on Monday morning, where they toured classrooms and held a discussion on continued funding for safety measures, CBS Miami reported.

Kindergarten through second-grade students greeted the politicians at Brauser Maimonides Academy Jewish Day School in Fort Lauderdale, where there was a roundtable with the administration. The visit was DeSantis’s first official trip since being declared the winner of the tight gubernatorial race.

The discussion was about scholarship money, as well as safety funding, given last month’s mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

“One of the concerns is, unfortunately, the need for school security particularly at these Jewish day schools, given recent events,” DeSantis said. “I’m 100 percent supportive of continuing.”

Florida’s 2017-2018 state budget allocated $645,000 to increase security at Jewish schools.
