Witness The Creation Of The World’s Biggest Bagel And Lox Sandwich
If bagels at your local deli seem oversized, wait until National Bagel & Lox Day.
Brooklyn-based appetizing giant Acme Smoked Fish Corp. is teaming with Big Apple bagel mavens Zucker’s Bagels this Friday, February 9, to build “the largest bagel and lox sandwich ever recorded.”
Acme will host an open-to-the-public event at its Brooklyn facility, where co-CEO Adam Caslow and Zucker’s founder Matt Pomerantz will create a giant sandwich in front of a crowd, attempting to make it into the “Guinness World Record” book.
“We are hard at work making a classic New York bagel at a giant size — which we’ll pile high with pounds and pounds of our favorite Nova Scotia smoked salmon from Acme, plus all of our favorite toppings from the Zucker’s Traditional sandwich: cream cheese, tomatoes, red onions and capers,” said Pomerantz. “This all may require a large saw or a paddle spreader, and lots of encouragement from the crowd, but we will get it done!”
The companies will follow the rules set forth by Guinness, and the sandwich will be carefully constructed and weighed before it is cut for the crowd to enjoy, Pomerantz said. “If we know New Yorkers, and especially Acme’s regular Fish Friday crowd, no bite will be left uneaten!”
If you can’t schlep to Acme, there are plenty of places to celebrate the, uh, holiday this year. Whole Foods stores will host their own observances; the chain’s website helpfully defines both “bagel” and “lox.” Psychelidelicatessen in Troy, New York, will mark the occasion with discounts on smoked fish. And Ragamuffins Coffee House in Laurel, Maryland, will celebrate with savory and sweet bagel sandwiches.
In the meantime, we’ll report from Acme in Brooklyn on Friday — and share the world’s largest bagel/lox sandwich with you.
