They may have been a hit when the kiddies were still in strollers — when they picked them out of those little red boxes with sticky fingers. If raisins are received while trick-or-treating, however, they will most likely be used as tiny projectiles — ones that are more likely to be thrown at you than at each other.
Israel: a land flowing with milk and honey or, more literally, a land filled with cranes and beautiful, shirtless youths. Israelis and Jewish Americans are immensely proud of Israel’s accomplishments, specifically its junk food, for good reason. We describe Bamba, Aroma ice cafe, and bagged “shoko” as food of the gods. But sometimes, enthusiasm for Israeli products goes too far.
Unlike most camps, the one I went to when I was a kid actually allowed parents to send food. So there was no need to smuggle anything in. I was perhaps a bit more spoiled than the typical camper: My mother would send up a huge package filled with nosh before me and my siblings even left for camp, so that when we arrived we’d have a box full of goodies waiting for us.
Sleepaway camps are great: The kids get to run around and be one with nature; while you, the parent, get to enjoy your summer free of kvetchy heat-stroke-afflicted children.
My mother wasn’t a candy person. (She was a salad person — though in restaurants she told everyone at the table what to order so she could taste the things she’d have preferred to eat if she wasn’t on a perpetual diet.) I can’t remember or even imagine my mother indulging in a Snickers or a Milky Way bar.
