Santorum: Pressure Iran

Senator Rick Santorum’s statement on Iran’s latests moves:

“While I am disappointed in the failure of Iran’s government to comply with the terms of UN Security Council Resolution 1696, the failure to suspend nuclear enrichment activities is not unexpected. The United States and other nations of the world gave Iran an opportunity to terminate these activities in return for diplomatic and economic engagement. Regrettably, Iran has chosen the path of defiance and confrontation.

“Accordingly, though I support efforts within the UN or among willing nations of the world to impose sanctions on Iran’s government so as to bring about a halt in nuclear enrichment and reprocessing activities, I do not believe even that action will have any effect on the Iranian autocracy. The defiant position articulated by Iran’s government this past week only serves to emphasize the need to bring about a change in that government and to devote additional resources to fostering a transition to a democratic government in Iran.

“It is urgent for our government to speak with a single voice by supporting pro-democracy forces in Iran, by isolating the leaders of Iran through a travel embargo, by organizing an international effort to deny Iran access to military and dual-use technology, and to increase broadcasting of pro-democracy information to the Iranian people.”
