Denmark Group Pushes for Labels on Settlement Products
A Danish pro-Palestinian group will step up its campaign to label goods produced in Jewish settlements after its ads were dropped from public buses.
Fathi el-Abed, the chairman of the Danish Palestinian Friendship Association, vowed that his group will continue to urge Danes to boycott West Bank settlement goods.
Last week Movia, the public transportation service in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, ordered advertisements placed by the group to be removed from 35 buses calling the ads “unnecessarily offensive,” according to AFP. The company reportedly received 100 complaints in the four days that the ads were displayed.
The ad features two women pictured next to the statement: “Our conscience is clean! We neither buy products from the Israeli settlements nor invest in the settlement industry.”
Abed told AFP his association would initiate a national campaign in response to the removal of the bus ads. He also said that the company is considering legal action against the bus company for removing the ads before the two weeks it paid for to display them were up.
Last month, 16 of the 28 foreign ministers wrote to European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini asking her to require that goods produced in the Jewish settlements be labeled as originating in the “West Bank.”
