Tooting Our Own Horn

On October 27, New York’s Independent Press Association, a not-for-profit organization that supports independent publications committed to social justice, recognized three Forward articles at its annual Ippies Award dinner.

An editorial by Forward editor J.J. Goldberg on Chile’s January elections (“Chile Future,” January 20, 2006) was given honorable mention.

An investigative piece on the office of New York State District Attorney Eliot Spitzer by Forward staff writer Nathaniel Popper (“Probe of Shul Group Had N.Y. Crimebuster’s Office in Tangles,” December 9, 2005) was also given honorable mention.

And for his muckraking exposé about working conditions at the glatt kosher AgriProcessors slaughterhouse in Postville, Iowa (“In Iowa Meat Plant, Kosher ‘Jungle’ Breeds Fear, Injury, Short Pay,” May 26, 2006), Popper took home first prize for a story on labor issues. We salute our staff.
