It May Not Be A Golden Age, But Television Today Has Much To Offer

Dear Mr. Letzler,

Many thanks returned for your thoughtful, informative letter in response to my article on Mrs. Maisel. First of all, yes, of course you are correct: It’s a rimshot! I stand corrected.

Second, when I see your location is Germany, your thoughts and opinions are all the more meaningful to me. ( As I noted, the second career I had was in Holocaust related activities and organizations.)

I am, however, going to make a distinction in saying: is there anything like “unmeaningful anti-Semitism?” It’s all harmful, and even if the dull ignorants are receiving the message, it has consequences.

Having spent twenty years in show biz, mostly TV, I have to also quibble with your broad characterization of the “uselessness and dumbing down of the world” to which you say it contributes. I find a lot worthwhile to watch, even now — though I was lucky enough to work on shows during what was then called “The Golden Age.”

As to my stories about Lenny and Joan and others, please buy my book “Hot Pants in Hollywood: Sex, Secrets & Sitcoms” and you will get much more detail. In fact, Lenny Bruce has his own chapter. Shameless plug, but I’d love to hear your opinion of it and look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely, Susan Silver
