Shofar Flash Mob Set for September 18

Dust off those rams’ horns and keep checking your Facebook updates and Twitter feeds. There’s going to be a worldwide shofar flash mob on September 18 and you are not going to want to miss it.

Art Kibbutz NYC is hosting “the greatest Shofar-blowing event since Sinai” as a massive call for teshuvah during the month of Elul. To the extent possible, the flash mobs will be coordinated across various global locations. All the flash mobs will be recorded and combined by a composer into an electronic Rosh Hashanah greeting card.

As of right now, the website only lists events in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Although people sometimes forget, there are Jews outside of New York. The Shmooze expects other cities to be involved, as well.

If you are a bit rusty on your shofar blowing — or if you don’t know how to blow one at all — you still have a few weeks to hone your teruah technique and develop your lung capacity. The blowing will last a full 2 minutes, which is a long time for those of us not in top shofar shape. What better incentive is there for those couch potatoes among to make good on New Year’s resolutions from 5771 and visit the gym at least a few times before 5772 rolls in?

Art Kibbutz NYC predicts that the incredible sound made by the flash mobbers will “rouse the heavens, and make Jews around the world, the international media and passers-by tremble.” At the very least, on-lookers and on-listeners will ask, “What the heck was that?”
