President & CEO

The Foundation for Jewish Culture supports Jewish culture and Jewish art in America. The FJC was founded in 1960 to preserve and cultivate European Jewish culture following its devastation during the Holocaust. Since then, the Foundation has distributed millions of dollars to Jewish artists and academics. Through fellowships, grants and recognition awards, FJC promotes increased visibility of Jewish literature, film, theater and scholarship. In September 2013, FJC announced it would cease operations and close its doors in 2014.

Elise Bernhardt has served as president and CEO of the Foundation for Jewish Culture since 2006. Bernhardt was the founder and executive director of Dancing in the Streets, an organization that produces free public dance performances. She served as executive director of The Kitchen, an incubator for contemporary artists. A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Bernhardt has also worked as artistic advisor of New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival.
