The Jewish Council for Public Affairs, which calls itself the “representative voice of the organized American Jewish community,” seeks to advance the public affairs goals of the organized American Jewish community. Founded in 1944, The JCPA is committed to protecting the rights of Jews worldwide, and promoting the security of Israel, and tolerance and democracy in America. The JCPA serves as the national advisory and coordinating body of 14 national and 125 local Jewish community agency members. It has previously supported a range of policy goals, including reduced gun violence, immigration reform, poverty reduction, and an end to genocide in Darfur. Its initiatives include the Israel Action Network, which fights delegitimization of Israel, and the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life.

Rabbi Steve Gutow is the president and CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs. He previously served as the first regional director of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee’s Southwest Region and was the founding executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council. After several decades working in law, politics and Jewish advocacy, Gutow decided to enter the rabbinate and received ordination from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in 2003. He served as the first full-time rabbi of the Reconstructionist Minyan of St. Louis, Mo. prior to joining the JCPA as executive director in 2005.
