0US Ambassador Chris Stevens Killed at Libya Consulate after American Film Satirizes Mohammad

A mob armed with guns and grenades launched a deadly attack on the US Consulate on Tuesday night, killing the US ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. The attack occurred due to Islamic anger over the depiction of the Prophet Mohammad in an amateur film. The death of Chris Stevens, the first US ambassador to die in the line of duty since 1979 came on the 11th anniversary of the September 11th terror attack. US President Barack Obama strongly condemned the violence, vowed Wednesday to bring the killers to justice and tightened security at diplomatic posts around the world. Just 3 years ago Obama, speaking in Cairo, pledged a new beginning for relations between the US and Muslims around the world. Today, with election victories in Arab Spring countries Egypt and Tunisia by Islamist parties, there are fears that the Arab Spring could in fact lead to an Islamic Winter. Hopes of greater democratic freedoms, human rights and openness are now being subsumed into a reality of strict and extremist interpretations of Sharia Law in the region. During a recent conference in Doha, the Chairman of the Tunisia Movement, Rachid al-Ghannouchi described the increasing role of Islam as “divine justice”. Known as the cradle of the Arab Spring, Libya, is now controlled by a secular government, though there are signs of a creeping Islamist threat.
