THIS MAGIC MOMENT
Do you like to stroll down memory lane? Or wistfully recall the bright gleam in the eyes of the stars of the stage? “Great Moments of 20th-Century Music” presents images of musical masters and magical moments culled from the Emmerich Gara Collection, the LIFE Picture Collection and the Associated Press Collection, representing not just opera but dance, musical theater, classical music and jazz.
Lining the Lincoln Center Gallery’s walls are images of Leonard Bernstein conducting Isaac Stern, George Gershwin with Rouben Mamoulian during a rehearsal of “Porgy and Bess,” Arthur Fiedler, Maria Callas at the Metropolitan Opera, Billie Holiday at the Metropolitan Opera and Yehudi Menuhin, among others. Most of the images on view here have been printed from the original negative (the prints on view are available for purchase, priced at $195 to $2,000).
And while you’re at Lincoln Center, don’t miss the 12th Annual Jewish Film Festival (please see Film listings).
The Gallery at Lincoln Center, Broadway between 62nd and 65th streets, concourse level; through Feb. 1, Mon.-Sat. 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; free. (212.580.4673)
