Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert arrived at a Jerusalem court on Tuesday (July 10) to hear the verdict in his trial over three cases of alleged bid-rigging, bribery and fraud. Olmert resigned as prime minister in September 2008, saying he wanted to clear his name but he stayed on as caretaker until March 2009 when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-leaning government was sworn in. He has pleaded not guilty on all accounts.
Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, visiting the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz in southern Poland on Friday, said the atrocities the site had witnessed during World War Two were a tragedy of the entire human race. As many as 1.5 million people, mostly Jews, perished in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, a hallmark of the Holocaust, either in the gas chambers or from freezing temperatures, starvation, sickness, medical tests and forced labor.
The German Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle, has told a crowd of Jews at a rabbinic ordination ceremony in Cologne that he supports the Jewish community’s right to circumcision. Mr Westerwelle said that “those who do not allow the circumcision of boys in Germany do not allow Jewish life in Germany.” The comments are likely to be music to the ears of German Jews who faced a recent legal challenge over the ancient practice. President of the World Jewish Congress Ronald S. Lauder: “We argue among ourselves enough about what is right and what is wrong. We don’t need anyone else to argue with us. The hallmark of a free country is that it respects minorities and protects their rights. Therefore I ask Germany: choose freedom, choose tolerance, choose respect and let us be Jewish here.” A Cologne court ruled in June that circumcision on religious grounds amounted to bodily harm, following complications with the practice on a Muslim boy. Since then the state of Berlin formally legalized the practice, while the federal government is likely to legislate on the issue in due course.

They’re often called the “forgotten refugees” — a group of more than 850000 Jews who were kicked out of the Arab world or fled from state-sponsored persecution after the State of Israel was founded… It’s what some historian’s call the Arab world’s “double war” on the Jewish state. one was fought on the battleground, the other at home against the nearly one million Jews who had lived for hundreds of years in Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Tunisai, Yemen, Morroco and Algeria. The plight of these Arab Jewish refugees never made world headlines for very long — that’s because nearly 70% of them went to Israel where they were integrated. But their expulsion from Arab countries was filled with abuse and violence — most left wealthy communities with no more than a suitcase in their hand. The Arab governments are estimated to have seized between what would be today the equivalent of $5-$10 billion dollars of assets from the Arab Jewish refugees. At this first ever conference called “Justice for Jewish Refugees from Arab countries,” the Israeli government and the World Jewish Congress are demanding recognition of the crimes committed and compensation… Prime Minister Netanyahu is championing the cause more than any of his predecessors…he recorded a message for the conference… Levana Zamir, who was born in Cairo, came to the conference to tell her harrowing story. She was 10 years old on May 16th, 1948, the day the state of Israel was declared. That evening, 10 Egyptian police …
Is the Arab Spring set to turn into an Islamist Winter? At the world summit of the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism, Israeli Home Front Minister Avi Dichter has warned that the Muslim Brotherhood is using the Arab Spring to create an Islamic caliphate. He said that last year’s revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt and the ongoing uprising in Syria will threaten Jordan and other Arab countries, mentioning that the ‘Muslim Brotherhood already has an outpost in the Palestinian territories in the form of Hamas’. Dichter went on to state that the fall of Assad’s regime is inevitable and that whatever takes its place could have serious consequences for Syria’s western neighbours, Jordan and Lebanon.
