Apparently, many folks in this gated community prefer to be devastated by another storm rather than opening their private beaches to the public.
Hurricane-force winds and historic flooding from superstorm Sandy have devastated the Brooklyn neighborhood of Sea Gate, a gated community on the western tip of Coney Island that is home to several hundred Jewish families.
A convoy of US navy warships passed through the Suez Canal in Egypt on August 25 on their way to the Mediterranean Sea. It is not clear whether the vessels were bound for the coast of Syria, but both Russia and the US have periodically increased their military footprint in the region as the blood civil war in Syria continues. The canal is one of the world’s busiest waterways and a vital source of foreign currency revenue for Egypt’s economy.

For the 17th year, cyclists from around the world came to Israel’s Dead Sea for a two-day festival and competition. Only a short distance from the Dead Sea, an international mountain-bike race attracted more than 1500 riders during a two-day festival of running, cycling and family fun. Mariod Athanasiadis took first place in the 17th annual Veolia Desert Challenge (www.desertchallenge.co.il/mainpage-6-33) from December 2-3, 2011. Also known as the Race for Peace, it is the lowest mountain bike race on earth. Its founder, Nimrod Cohen, hopes one day to make half of the competition in neighboring Jordan. “It was fun. You have to have skills, to pass fast through the canyon,” she says. Some riders come back year after year.
