What The Bible Really Says About Refugees

On June 16, 1967, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel sent a telegram to President John F. Kennedy proposing the president declare a “state of moral emergency” as a response to the ongoing racial injustices in the United States. “The hour calls for moral grandeur and spiritual audacity,” Heschel proclaimed.

A religious person must feel the pain and suffering of the most vulnerable members of society — that is perhaps the central command of the entire Torah. What does the current state of affairs call for as nearly 2,000 children have been separated from their families when entering the country during a six-week period in April and May? Religion should be a source of moral clarity, yet we find Attorney General Jeff Sessions turning to the Christian Bible to defend the Trump administration’s immigration policy, and the Orthodox Union honoring Sessions with a plaque of the biblical verse “Justice, justice shall you pursue.”

In case we’ve forgotten, here are 30 excerpts from the Bible that remind us about the religious imperative toward protecting the stranger and the helpless.

1) The LORD appeared to him by the terebinths of Mamre; he was sitting at the entrance of the tent as the day grew hot. Looking up, he saw three men standing near him. As soon as he saw them, he ran from the entrance of the tent to greet them and, bowing to the ground,he said, “My lords, if it please you, do not go on past your servant.Let a little water be brought; bathe your feet and recline under the tree. And let me fetch a morsel of bread that you may refresh yourselves; then go on—seeing that you have come your servant’s way.” They replied, “Do as you have said.” Genesis 18:1-5

2) The two angels arrived in Sodom in the evening, as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to greet them and, bowing low with his face to the ground,he said, “Please, my lords, turn aside to your servant’s house to spend the night, and bathe your feet; then you may be on your way early.” But they said, “No, we will spend the night in the square.”But he urged them strongly, so they turned his way and entered his house. He prepared a feast for them and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. They had not yet lain down, when the townspeople, the men of Sodom, young and old—all the people to the last man—gathered about the house. And they shouted to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may be intimate with them.” Genesis 19:1-5

3) And Laban said to Jacob, “What did you mean by keeping me in the dark and carrying off my daughters like captives of the sword? Why did you flee in secrecy and mislead me and not tell me? I would have sent you off with festive music, with timbrel and lyre. You did not even let me kiss my sons and daughters good-by! It was a foolish thing for you to do. Genesis 31:26-28
