100 Years Ago in the forward
The Forverts is growing by leaps and bounds! The Association of American Advertisers, the organization that determines the number of papers bought in America, recently announced that the Forverts sells not 83,474 daily papers, as was previously determined, but 113,800! This statistic places the Forverts on par with the largest, most significant newspapers in the United States. The growth of the paper has been exponential since its inception 13 years ago. In 1905, 36,624 papers were sold per day. By 1907, it was 72,353 and in 1908, sales grew to 83,474. It is expected that our circulation will continue to grow as immigrants continue to arrive.
75 Years Ago in the forward
Anti-Semitic attacks by ultranationalist Polish student groups have continued to worsen in Warsaw. Fifteen Jewish students at the University of Warsaw were wounded during a riot instigated by a right-wing student group. Although police had managed to take control of the situation, sporadic attacks have occurred, a number of these very recently. At one point during the riots, a group of about 100 Polish nationalist students who were armed with clubs and swords fought with police on the university campus. After a few arrests were made, the students regrouped and marched to the Jewish quarter of the city, where they began to randomly attack Jews until the police put a stop to it.
50 Years Ago in the forward
The chairman of the Jewish Labor Committee, Adolph Held, described his emotional visit to a building at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem that bears the name of this newspaper’s late editor, Comrade Abraham Cahan. The building was the venue for a meeting of the committee and the Workmen’s Circle/Arbiter Ring, and Held described to members of both organizations the pride he felt at seeing Cahan’s name in bold letters above the entrance. Everyone sat rapt during Held’s description of the event.
