Deep Roots, Far-flung Branches

This month, CLAL-The National Center for Learning and Leadership will publish a tribute book to coincide with its 30th -anniversary dinner. The tribute book will feature the work of Moico Yaker, a Peruvian-born artist who currently splits his time between Lima and New York. “Moico shatters the false divide between Jewish and human, bridging the gap between our deep connection to a particular people and our eternal link to all of humanity” said Rabbi Brad Hirschfield, vice president of CLAL and editor of the tribute book. “Like our work, Moico’s art is a tribute to the unique beauty that comes from having both deep roots and a fearlessly open embrace of the wider world of which we are a part.”

Indeed, Yaker openly professes to an appreciation of this balance. “You’re going to have to look harder to find what is Jewish in the visual element. It is not immediately apparent,” Yaker said in an interview with the Forward. “I deal with the absence of identity in things.”

Yaker will be showing his work at his New York studio during the next month. 526 W. 26th St., Room 612, New York, N.Y. Open by appointment. For more information, call 917-428-3653 or visit www.moicoyaker.com.

The Forward is free to read, but it isn’t free to produce

I hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, I’d like to ask you to please support the Forward.

At a time when other newsrooms are closing or cutting back, the Forward has removed its paywall and invested additional resources to report on the ground from Israel and around the U.S. on the impact of the war, rising antisemitism and polarized discourse.

Readers like you make it all possible. We’ve started our Passover Fundraising Drive, and we need 1,800 readers like you to step up to support the Forward by April 21. Members of the Forward board are even matching the first 1,000 gifts, up to $70,000.

This is a great time to support independent Jewish journalism, because every dollar goes twice as far.
