100 Years Ago in the forward

Not long ago, it was reported in a number of newspapers that conditions for workers in the South were terrible and not entirely dissimilar from the conditions during which slavery was the dominant form of employment. As organizations such as the Jewish Territorialist Organization were sending Jewish immigrants to live and work in the South and proclaiming that these immigrants are being redeemed under the organization’s guidance, the Forward published an editorial commenting that it was probably not a good idea to continue sending workers to an area where conditions for working people were so bad. In response, Jewish philanthropist Cyrus Sulzberger wrote us; he complained that our view was inaccurate and that Jewish immigrants who went to Galveston, Texas, and other locales were not being enslaved but were gainfully employed in good jobs. But we don’t believe that the South will become, as the organization implies, another Land of Israel for the Jewish masses.

Rose Ziskind, a mother of three, has fingered her Trotskyist husband, Sam, in the murder two Stalinists on Manhattan’s Avenue A. This sensational charge has led to the arrest of the 49-year-old communist, who is currently being held in Essex Market Court. The murders, which took place last August, occurred after a fight had broken out between Stalinists and Trotskyists on the corner of 7th Street and Avenue A. A number of Trotskyists ran up on the roof of a nearby building and started throwing bricks and bottles at the group of Stalinists below. Two of the Stalinists, Michael Simon and Nick Krasik, died after bricks hit their heads. Rose Ziskind informed on her husband, from whom she is separated, after he was freed on an unrelated charge of disorderly conduct. When the judge freed him, she screamed out, “You can’t set him free; he’s a murderer!” She then provided the district attorney with an affidavit explaining the situation. Sam Ziskind denied the whole story. He is currently being held on a murder charge.

50 Years Ago in the forward

In an attempt to foment unrest and war, Soviet radio announced that Israel has begun massing troops on the Syrian border. The Israelis and the United Nations Security Council quickly denied this. The Soviet report, which was broadcast in Arabic, accused the Americans of using Israel to attack the Arabs. At the same time, Israel accused Syria of shooting at Israeli engineers working in the demilitarized zone below the Golan Heights. Adding fuel to the fire, King Saud of Saudi Arabia announced a new call for the destruction of the State of Israel. It was noted that a few years previous, the king said that the Arabs should be willing to give up 10 million lives in order to free Palestine from Jewish domination.
