Romney Cruises to Easy Win in Nevada
Mitt Romney cruised to an easy win in the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, cementing his position as frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination, news outlets projected.
Romney had 42% of the votes, compared to 26% for Newt Gingrich with just under half the precincts reporting. Ron Paul had 18% and Rick Santorum trailed with 12%, Politico reported.
The win came on the heels of Romney’s victory in the Florida primary and set him firmly back in the driver’s seat in the primary race. The next contests are in Colorado and Minnesota on Tuesday, where Romney’s superior organization and cash-flush campaign should also give him a huge edge.
Romney took aim at President Obama in his victory speech, accusing him of failing to pull the nation out of the deep recession.
“America has also had enough of your kind of help,” he said, CNN reported.
Gingrich is hoping to keep his campaign alive until Super Tuesday when the contest moves to several more conservative states.
He struck a defiant note as the results rolled in from Nevada, insisting that he will fight all the way to the convention to try to block Romney from winning the nomination.
