Mortar Shells From Syria Hit Golan Heights
Mortar shells from fighting in Syria spilled over into Israel’s Golan Heights, with no injuries reported.
Israeli reports said that the several shells landed in an open area close to 7 a.m. on Tuesday. The Syrian army is believed to have fired them, aiming at Syrian villages near the border. This is the first time fire from Syria has crossed into Israel.
The Israeli Defense Forces submitted a complaint to the United Nations over the shells, and a spokesperson said that “fire from Syria leaking into Israel will not be accepted,” according to the Jerusalem Post.
During the past few months, fears of the Syrian conflict leading to fighting with Israel have risen. Last week, the IDF conducted a surprise military drill in the Golan to simulate an attack scenario on the northern border. The IDF said that the drill was not related to recent events, according to the Post.
