One of Britain’s oldest synagogues will be renovated ahead of its 250th anniversary.
The Exeter Synagogue restoration project is slated to begin in March and is expected to end in time for the synagogue’s anniversary ceremony in July, a spokesperson for the synagogue told the BBC.
The roof of the synagogue, which is located about 150 miles west of London, will be replaced in the project, whose cost is estimated at $180,000.
The website of the Exeter synagogue describes the project as a “major repair and restoration programme, eliminating some of the causes of damp, and repairing parts which have been damaged or just generally deteriorated over time.”
The spokesperson told the BBC that the money would come from fundraising and from a bequest, and the work was expected to be completed by the end of June.
“It’s a community that’s grown over the years and we have members in Devon, Somerset and west Dorset,” she said. “It [the building] has deteriorated with age.”
