Jewish Democratic Chief: ‘Kick Through the Stomach’ as Donald Trump Clinches Win

The chair of the Jewish Democrats has left the building, feeling a kick “all the way through the stomach” as Donald Trump seemed headed for a stunning victory.
As a Trump win seemed increasingly inevitable, Hillary Clinton’s election night event at the Javits Center is winding down. Greg Rosenbaum, chairman of the National Jewish Democratic Council, headed out around midnight.
“I’m feeling some serious emptiness right now,” Rosenbaum said.
Rosenbaum said that the mood started to swing in the room where he sweated out the evening when the results in Florida started to look bad for Clinton.
Last week, Rosenbaum’s favorite baseball team, the Cleveland Indians, lost the World Series. (Rosenbaum owns a minor league Indians franchise.) “That was a kick in the stomach,” he said. “This feels like a foot went all the way through my stomach.”
If Trump wins, it won’t be with the support of American Jews: Late Tuesday night, exit polls showed that 70% of Jews had voted for Clinton.

This is a moment of great uncertainty for the news media, for the Jewish people, and for our sacred democracy. It is a time of confusion and declining trust in public institutions. An era in which we need humans to report facts, conduct investigations that hold power to account, tell stories that matter and share honest discourse on all that divides us.
With no paywall or subscriptions, the Forward is entirely supported by readers like you. Every dollar you give this Passover is invested in the future of the Forward — and telling the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
