Kander Foe Roy Blunt Joins D.C. Country Club After Denying It During Campaign

Last fall’s senatorial race in Missouri pitted Democratic hopeful Jason Kander against GOP incumbent Sen. Roy Blunt. With less than a month to go, Kander’s campaign pushed a report that Blunt’s wife, lobbyist Abigail Blunt, was working to secure membership for the couple in a D.C. country club, a charge that Blunt’s campaign vehemently denied. Eleven days later, Blunt squeaked by Kander, and the story died.
But now, it’s rearing its head once more.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Saturday that Blunt and his wife are listed as “candidates enjoying summer privileges” at the Chevy Chase Club, where membership requires an $80,000 payment up-front, multiple sponsorships, and a $600 monthly fee, among other costs. According to people familiar with the process, the “candidate” status virtually ensures full membership in the future.
Last October, the Kander campaign had used to the report to position Blunt as being distant from Missourians.
Blunt’s office had no comment.
