Bush Appoints Orthodox Jew as Deputy Secretary of HHS
Yesterday saw the announcement that Tevi David Troy, an Orthodox Jew who currently serves as the Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy, will be nominated as the Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Troy previously served as the White House Liaison to the Jewish community.
The White House’s announcement was quickly answered by glowing press releases from the Orthodox Union and the Republican Jewish Coalition. See below for all three:

The President intends to nominate Tevi David Troy, of New York, to be Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services. Dr. Troy currently serves as Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. Prior to this, he served as Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Cabinet Secretary. Earlier in his career, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy at the Department of Labor. Dr. Troy received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and his master’s degree and PhD from The University of Texas at Austin.
Orthodox Union: Today, the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America congratulated Tevi Troy, Ph.D. upon his nomination by President Bush to serve as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In these capacities the UOJCA has worked closely with Dr. Troy on a range of policy matters.
UOJCA President Steve Savitsky and UOJCA Director of Public Policy Nathan Diament, issued the following statement commenting on the nomination:
On behalf of the Orthodox Jewish community, the UOJCA congratulates Tevi Troy on his nomination to continue his service to the nation as Deputy Secretary of Health & Human Services. We are grateful for the good work we have accomplished on a range of matters working with Dr. Troy and we take pride in the fact that Dr. Troy is a proud and active member of the Orthodox Jewish community and an OU member congregation (the Kemp Mill Synagogue). We wish to express our appreciation to President Bush for selecting an upstanding member of our community for this position of importance and responsibility.
RJC: May 3, 2007, Washington, DC… The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) warmly congratulates Dr. Tevi Troy on his nomination today as Deputy Secretary for Health and Human Services.
“Tevi Troy is an excellent choice for this important post at the Department of Health and Human Services,” said RJC Executive Director Matthew Brooks. “He has an incredible depth of knowledge of the issues that HHS faces from his work assisting President Bush with domestic policy. He has been working in this field for many years now and knows the people and the issues involved very well.”
“Tevi is also an insightful thinker and a profoundly moral individual. We had the privilege of working with him when he served as White House liaison to the Jewish community and he was unfailingly fair and responsive to the community. Tevi is a public servant of the highest caliber and we are delighted that President Bush has tapped him for this new role.”
