Editors Note

Careful readers of the Forward will notice something different about the second page of this newspaper. What had been our “Shmooze” page, filled with fun, gossipy tidbits of popular culture, has now become a section devoted to the best of our many blogs on www.forward.com.

This is more than a design change. It’s another step in the evolution of the Forward from an ink-on-paper weekly to a media organization delivering top-notch journalism in print, online and on your smartphone, through podcasts and videos, in ways that tap into the full expression of modern Jewish life.

On this new page, overseen by Laura Sinberg, our features editor, you will be able to dip into discussions about women’s issues, politics, food, arts and celebrities, or read the brilliant musings of columnist J.J. Goldberg. (Corrections can now be found on page four.) One thing won’t change: Masha Leon’s unique take on the Jewish social scene will still be available.

And I’m proud to announce that the Sisterhood, our women’s issues blog, has been named a finalist for a 2010 Online Journalism Award.

The Sisterhood offers a multi-generational, multi-denominational and geographically diverse roster of writers who provide deep and insightful commentary on Jewish issues from women’s perspectives, and women’s issues from Jewish perspectives. Begun only 18 months ago under the indefatigable leadership of Gabrielle Birkner, our web editor, the Sisterhood has already become a brand name in Jewish journalism, so this national recognition is especially welcome.

This is a moment of great uncertainty. Here’s what you can do about it.

We hope you appreciated this article. Before you go, we’d like to ask you to please support the Forward’s independent Jewish news this Passover. All donations are being matched by the Forward Board - up to $100,000.

This is a moment of great uncertainty for the news media, for the Jewish people, and for our sacred democracy. It is a time of confusion and declining trust in public institutions. An era in which we need humans to report facts, conduct investigations that hold power to account, tell stories that matter and share honest discourse on all that divides us.

With no paywall or subscriptions, the Forward is entirely supported by readers like you. Every dollar you give this Passover is invested in the future of the Forward — and telling the American Jewish story fully and fairly.

The Forward doesn’t rely on funding from institutions like governments or your local Jewish federation. There are thousands of readers like you who give us $18 or $36 or $100 each month or year.

Support our mission to tell the Jewish story fully and fairly.
