Florida’s Dora Teitelbaum Center for Jewish Culture presents a month full of events dedicated to Marc Chagall (1889-1985), kicking off with a screening of Harry Rasky’s Oscar-nominated documentary “Homage to Chagall: The Colour of Love.”
An exhibition of some 20 signed original Chagall lithographs are complemented by panels from Salvador Dali’s “Aliya” series. Also in the lineup is a lecture by Troim Handler on “The Jewish World of Marc Chagall” and a later slide lecture on “The Artistic Influences of Marc Chagall,” which is followed by a reception — with music by the Klezmernauts.
Born into a chasidic family in Vitebsk, just east of Vilnius in the Pale of Settlement, Chagall often painted with a nostalgic bent, with scenes reminiscent of shtetl life often appearing in his quasi-cubist works.
