For Our Consideration

As Ami Eden pointed out yesterday, it hasn’t gone unnoticed that Democrats are backing off the 9-11 recommendations that call for reorganizing Congress.

This includes the disregarding of a recommendation that term limits on the Intelligence Committee be eliminated. Here’s a statement from Speaker-elect Pelosi’s office about the decision:

“Eliminating term limits is among the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. These recommendations were included by the Commission, but left open to the Congress for consideration.

The Select Committee on Intelligence has very unique rules, among them is that seniority on the committee is established at the start of each Congress and does not carry over to a new Congress. Members are appointed to the committee at the start of a Congress, but only for that Congress. The Members are selected by the Speaker and the Minority Leader who take many different issues into account including workload and other committee’s on which the Member serves. Speaker-Designate Pelosi has extensive experience with the Intelligence Committee having served there for 14 years and she is well aware of the need for a strong Chair.”
