Tzipi Named to Newsweek List of Powerful Women
Opposition leader Tzipi Livni was named one of “150 women who shake the world,” by Newsweek magazine on Monday.
Livni, the only Israeli woman in the list, was honored along with another “150 fearless women” from all over the world, ranging from U.S. singer Lady Gaga and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, to the Mexican Attorney General Marisa Morales and Yemeni Nobel peace prize laureate Tawakkol Karman.
The list includes women who “are starting revolutions, opening schools, and fostering a brave new generation. From Detroit to Kabul, these women are making their voices heard,” Newsweek’s Daily Beast website said.
“Whenever a woman or girl gains control of her destiny, the local standard of living goes up and the values of human rights spread. So this year, and every year, Newsweek will honor local heroes, and the growing network of powerful women who support their efforts,” the website said.
Newsweek described Livni as “one of the most powerful women” in Israel, and cited her being “the first female opposition leader in Israel’s history.”
