Americans Split on Iran Deal, Poll Says

A slight majority of Americans want Congress to reject the Iran nuclear deal, a CNN poll found.

The poll published Tuesday showed that 52 percent of respondents wanted Congress to reject the deal and 44 percent wanted it approved.

The phone poll of 1,017 adults, conducted by ORC International between July 22 and 25, has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

Congress has until mid-September to decide whether or not to approve the sanctions relief for nuclear restrictions deal reached between Iran and six major powers on July 14.

President Barack Obama, who says the deal is the only means of keeping Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, has said he will veto a measure of disapproval. Opponents of the deal would need to muster two-thirds majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to override the veto and kill the deal.

Israel’s government and most Republicans oppose the deal, saying it would lead Iran to the threshold of a nuclear weapon.
