Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert arrived at a Jerusalem court on Tuesday (July 10) to hear the verdict in his trial over three cases of alleged bid-rigging, bribery and fraud. Olmert resigned as prime minister in September 2008, saying he wanted to clear his name but he stayed on as caretaker until March 2009 when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-leaning government was sworn in. He has pleaded not guilty on all accounts.
Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, visiting the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz in southern Poland on Friday, said the atrocities the site had witnessed during World War Two were a tragedy of the entire human race. As many as 1.5 million people, mostly Jews, perished in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, a hallmark of the Holocaust, either in the gas chambers or from freezing temperatures, starvation, sickness, medical tests and forced labor.

After weeks of absence, Ethiopia announced the death of long-serving Prime Minister Meles Zenawi after he succumbed to an undisclosed illness. The 57-year-old Meles, seen by the opposition as an autocratic leader who tolerated no dissent but regarded by the West as a bulwark against Islamic militancy, died on late on Monday in a Brussels hospital, officials said. Speculation that Meles was seriously ill arose after he failed to attend an African Union summit last month.
Last week Israeli President Shimon Peres angered officials from the Prime minister’s office by publicly reacting to the situation in Iran. While the media has been reporting about Netanyahu’s government potentially preparing for a strike on Iran’s nuclear facility, the president was quoted saying in an interview to Israeli television that no military action will be taken in Iran before the November US presidential elections. And these statements came as quite a shock to the current Israeli government. According to the Israeli governmental system, the president holds an apolitical figurehead role, while the prime minister holds executive power on decision-making. Therefore, having President Peres insert commentary or make suggestions as to Israel’s strategic defense plans upset the government, seeing as he was perceived as overstepping his position. Like Peres, many wonder whether Israel should unilaterally strike Iran’s nuclear program. And discussions related to this matter are taking place in Israel as well as around the world. However, while Israeli and international citizens, politicians, and activists have the right to speak their mind, it is generally expected by most Israelis that the president, and especially this one, will maintain silence. Israel’s fifth president Yitzhak Navon was quoted supporting Peres’s remarks, noting that in some situations, one must say what he believes, even if he is the president of the state. Additionally, the White House praised Peres …
Uri Rozenthal - Minister of Foreign Affairs visits Israel. The Dutch government wants expansion of relations with Israel while the government of Prime Minister Netanyahu constantly proves to have paint to basic principles of international law, as well as American and European calls to finally get serious peace negotiations with the Palestinians to begin. The Netherlands supports the way that Israel 45 years ago has taken. As long as Israel keeps all in violation of all international law the Palestinian territories in a rock solid grip, oppressed the Palestinians with military hard hand, promotes emigration of its own population into the occupied territories including East Jerusalem. Israel’s occupation kills Israeli democracy, morally and spiritually. Criticism of Netanyahu comes from the Israeli security of Israel. It is incomprehensible why responsible Dutch parties VVD and CDA have no eye for the Israeli society initiatives that are aimed at serious talks with the Palestinians and halting the construction in the settlements. A majority of Dutch people want the occupation is ended and that the European Union puts pressure on Israel to terminate the settlements. So Rutte, Verhagen and Rozenthal, freeze relations with Israel and boycott all products from illegal Jewish settlements.
